Digit Reversal Without Apology

چکیده
In A Mathematician’s Apology [1] G. H. Hardy states, “8712 and 9801 are the only four-figure numbers which are integral multiples of their reversals”; and, he further comments that “this is not a serious theorem, as it is not capable of any significant generalization.” However, Hardy’s comment may have been short-sighted. In 1966, A. Sutcliffe [2] expanded this obscure fact about reversals. Instead of restricting his study to base 10 integers and their reversals, Sutcliffe generalized the problem to study all integer solutions of

To the Editor: A letter to The New England Journal of Medicine entitled “Mechanical Extraction of a Basilar-Artery Embolus With the Use of Flow Reversal and a Microbasket” (N Engl J Med. 2002;347:769 –770) described the first case in which we used a new technique combining a mechanical extraction device and flow reversal. The manuscript submitted to and published in Stroke entitled “Treatment o...
متن کاملBit Reversal through Direct Fourier Permutation Method and Vectorial Digit Reversal Generalization
This paper describes the Direct Fourier Permuation Algorithm, an efficient method of computing Bit Reversal of natural indices [1, 2, 3, . . . , 2] in a vectorial manner (k iterations) and also proposes the Vectorial Digit Reversal Algorithm, a natural generalization of Direct Fourier Permutation Algorithm that is enabled to compute the r-digit reversal of natural indices [1, 2, 3, . . . , r] w...
متن کاملWhy Is It So Hard to Say Sorry? Evolution of Apology with Commitments
When making a mistake, individuals can apologize to secure further cooperation, even if the apology is costly. Similarly, individuals arrange commitments to guarantee that an action such as a cooperative one is in the others’ best interest, and thus will be carried out to avoid eventual penalties for commitment failure. Hence, both apology and commitment should go side by side in behavioral evo...

متن کاملDoes Sorry Work? The Impact of Apology Laws on Medical Malpractice
Apologies made by physicians for adverse medical events have been identified as a mitigating factor in whether patients decide to litigate. However, doctors are socialized to avoid apologies because apologies admit guilt and invite lawsuits. An "Apology Law," which specifies that a physician's apology is inadmissible in court, is written to encourage patient-physician communication. Building on...
